Don't buy no-name baby car seats, says SABS _1

By Botho Molosankwe

Parents with small children are advised to be vigilant when buying car seats for their children following a recall of about 50 baby car seats in Joburg.

The seats were found at Evermore in Newtown as well as Plenty Trading in China Mart. They were confiscated by South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) officials and will soon be destroyed.

Car seats for children are mounted to the seat of a motor vehicle to restrain and protect them in an event of an accident.

'They could not tell us if the seats were safe'
According to Moses Moeletsi of the SABS, the seats are not supposed to move after the baby has been fastened, nor should the straps hurt the baby while he or she is restrained and seated.

Moeletsi said the most important thing was that the seats must be tried and tested. However, the SABS were prompted to declare the confiscated seats as unsafe after the retailers failed to produce compliance certificates.

He said SABS officials had seen the seats in March and asked the retailers for proof of compliance or a test report from an accredited establishment - South African or overseas-based, if that was where the seats were manufactured.

"They could not tell us if the seats were safe," he said.

The seats confiscated from Evermore had "Ever Baby" identification, while Plenty Trading's seats did not carry any mark of identification. It is not known where the seats were manufactured.

Moeletsi said South Africans must not buy baby car seats from the two companies and that they should also avoid no-name seats as they are dangerous.

"People who have bought baby car seats must go to our website to check whether the seats they bought are mentioned there. If not, they should call the SABS call centre on 012-428-6534," he said.
